June 16: The day that started the creation of the New South Africa

June 16, 1976 will go down in history as the day that the world stood up and took notice of the South Africa regime. Children of all ages were killed at the hands of the South African police force in the bustling Johannesburg township of Soweto in the then Transvaal. While white South Africa cried and the merciless killings, black South Africa morned the dead of hunderds of children.

Fighting for the wish to be free to choose not be taught the language of Afrikaans, the children ended up fighting for the general freedom of South Africa. It was the day that the world stood up and noticed that South Africa would lie down no longer and the battle to free the nation took on a great significance.

A mere 14 years later, Nelson Mandela was released from prision and four years after that South Africa saw her first black president.

In 2007, today, we pay tribute to all these brave children who fought for our freedom. Today, we celebrate our democracy and remember those who fought so that we didn't have to.

Today, South Africa is free.
